60% GROWTH AT ENERGY STORAGE EUROPE 2016
The Energy Storage Europe 2016 (ESE) trade fair and conference and the 10th
International Renewable Energy Storage Conference (IRES 2016) by EUROSOLAR recently closed in Düsseldorf, Germany with the implementation of the “Düsseldorf Statement”. The statement focuses on the requirements for national and regional policy necessary to continue the energy revolution and storage expansion. More than 3,000 visitors from 54 countries attended this year’s trade fair. Over 650 experts gathered information at the conferences with economic and scientific focal points. This is a more than 60% increase in visitors participation compared to 2015 and once again confirms the position of the exhibition, the IRES Conference and the Energy Storage Europe Conference as globally leading specialist events for all storage technologies - from battery storage and thermal and mechanical storage to Power2Gas.
“Energy Storage Europe is still on a growth course. The increase in exhibitor and visitor numbers shows that the focus on the whole spectrum of storage technologies and the different conferences combined into one event are striking a chord with the industry. That is why we will be providing additional exhibition space for next year’s Energy Storage Europe, which will take place from March 14 to 16, 2017,” stated Hans Werner Reinhard, Member of the Messe Düsseldorf Management Board.:
Prof. Dirk Uwe Sauer, Member of the IRES Scientific Advisory Board, added: “Energy Storage Europe shows that industry and research have realized the cross-sector importance of combined solutions for power, heat and gas storage and are actively preparing or already offering solutions for this. The high number of 140 exhibitors proves that there are now also opportunities for companies to launch solutions on the market, which have been prepared in research and development over the last few years.”
Urban Windelen, Managing Director of the German Energy Storage Association, noted: “Energy storage technologies have reached market maturity; this year’s Energy Storage Europe impressively proves that again. In Germany it is just the framework conditions that are lagging behind and preventing the sensible launch of storage conducive to the network.”
Innovative products were also presented at Energy Storage Europe 2016 by various companies. H-TEC SYSTEMS GmbH, a subsidiary of GP JOULE GmbH, showed its scalable Power2Gas PEM electrolysis stack with outputs of up to 1 MW for the first time. The stack is designed for mass production and has a high power density with compact construction. Its potential to reduce prices for hydrogen production optimizes the interaction between renewable energy production, mobility and other industrial sectors.
MBS Naturstromspeicher GmbH introduced its new thermal natural heat accumulators in the form of pools in different shapes and sizes, fountains and natural looking ponds. With storage capacities from 5 kW to more than 300 kW and diameters from 2.4 m they enrich the areas around buildings with their high-quality design. For the storage function, extremely quiet fans feed or in the winter discharge the ambient heat to or from the water. With the help of a heat pump the stored energy is then used for heating or cooling.
In addition to young technology companies, industrial corporations such as Siemens AG and ABB Switzerland LtD. and a new player - the Daimler subsidiary Deutsche Automotive GmbH & Co. KG - also displayed their solutions at the trade fair.
Prof. Brian Vad Mathiesen, Member of the IRES Scientific Advisory Board, remarked: “I believe the world can go to 100% renewable energy. Scientific analyses clearly point in that direction. Understanding the roles of energy storage, flexible demands, efficient energy conversion and new energy demands is the key to understanding how a cost-efficient transition can take place. The last three conference days showed impressively, that after years of research, the industry is ready to enter the storage market. Now it’s up to the policy to set the course in the right direction.”
“With regards to the heat and cooling demand, which is 60% of the entire energy demand of Germany, thermal energy storage can contribute significantly to making the power market more flexible (e.g. using Power to Gas) and increasing energy efficiency (e.g. through waste heat recovery),” commented Dr. Andreas Hauer, Head of Division “Energy Storage” at ZAE Bavaria, who is taking over the position of Prof. Eicke R. Weber as Chairman of Energy Storage Europe in 2017.
Summary of the Düsseldorf Statement
The Düsseldorf Statement calls for a clear, regulatory framework for the market launch of storage solutions. An important flexibility option is that storage must be able to operate on the market equally on both the network and generation side with other flexibility options. Storage solutions may provide a number of services conducive to the system – services to promote the integration of renewable energies, to increase energy efficiency and to stabilize the networks. The technologies are ready for the market which is the greatest innovation driver to advance the use of storage for the energy revolution.
The statement also calls for barriers to be removed between the power, heat, gas and fuel markets to allow for sectors to link up. Important future technologies such as Power to X will be slowed downed if the rigid segregation of sectors is not removed. A clear statement of belief in storage is required from politics. In order to create fair competition, storage also must not be classified as the final consumer. Germany could then keep up with other European states where no or significantly lower network charges are paid.
